Belgium Scholarship for International Students 2011/12

VLIR-UOS awards scholarships to students from developing countries so that they can follow a master or training programme in Flanders, Belgium. These scholarships cover all related expenses. Every year, VLIR-UOS awards up to 180 scholarships to first-year master students and 70 scholarships to training participants.

Who is eligible?

All programmes are specifically designed for people in positions of responsibility in civil society (e.g. universities, schools, NGOs, local communities, governments).

The target group for master programmes is comprised of students from developing countries. Training programmes are tailored to people from developing countries with a certain degree of professional experience. Only residents and nationals of the following countries are eligible for a VLIR-UOS scholarship:

Application and selection procedure

Applicants applying for both academic admission and a VLIR-UOS scholarship need to consider both the admission requirements and the scholarship criteria.
Applicants applying for academic admission but not for a scholarship simply need to fulfill only the admission requirements of the host university running the programme.

The host university is in charge of the academic admission of applications. Study results will be taken into consideration during the selection, but the most important academic selection criteria are relevant professional experience and prospects for applying the acquired insights after return to the developing country. The academic admission requirements are specific to every programme. Please peruse the requirements from the relevant programme.

A joint selection committee of VLIR-UOS and the host university is responsible for selecting scholarships. The host university – not the applicant – forwards the scholarship applications to the VLIR-UOS secretariat if the academic admission requirements are met. The VLIR-UOS scholarship criteria relate to the qualifications required of all scholarship applicants and selection criteria evaluated by the selection committee.

All applicants receive an acknowledgement of receipt of their applications. Applicants whose proposals are deemed academically admissible and who are awarded a scholarship for the academic year 2011-2012 will be contacted by VLIR-UOS and the host university by e-mail in May and June 2011. Applicants whose proposals are deemed academically admissible will be notified by the host university.

You can apply for a VLIR-UOS scholarship from the 1st of October 2010.

You must fill in the pre-screening form at the bottom of the page of the programme you want to follow. You may only choose one programme. If you apply to more than one programme your details will be entered more than once in our central database and all your applications will be inadmissible.

So you must follow the correct and complete procedure below.

1. Apply on the VLIR-UOS website via the pre-screening form: fill in name, birth date, country, etc…;
2. Receive a VLIR-UOS application/file number by return e-mail from VLIR-UOS;
3. Apply on the website from the host university through the link mentioned in the return e-mail from VLIR-UOS;
4. Write the received VLIR-UOS application/file number on the application file from the host university;
5. Send a printout of your application file along with all required documents (diploma transcripts, motivation, etc…) to the International Office of the host university, not to VLIR-UOS.

Applications that are incomplete, illegible or that reach the host university’s International Office after the deadline will be automatically rejected.

The deadline to apply for a scholarship from VLIR-UOS for a master programme is the 1st of February 2011.

Belgium Scholarship 2010: Master complémentaire in International and Development Economics

Objectives

The objective of the programme is to train students in economic policy and help them become actors of development.

The programme has a three-sided approach :
* it analyses macroeconomic and trade policy issues related to economic growth and global economic integration;
* it discusses the institutional structures required for the effective working of a market economy;
* it explores strategies of poverty reduction.

This approach aims at imparting to the students a comprehensive view so that they can contribute to the development of realistic and innovative structural reforms that are based on sound economic analyses and well adjusted to the social and political context of each country.

CONTENTS

The courses of the programme are structured around three main themes:
1- Macroeconomic Management of Developing Economics
2- Economic Development and International Trade
3- Institutions, Growth and Development

Students are expected to participate actively in the classes and seminars and to write a personal study project.

Conditions for admission

- A four year university degree in economics. The whole university education of the applicant must be equivalent to at least 300 credits, as assessed by the admission committee of the programme;
- A strong interest in development;
- A professional experience of at least 2 years in direct relation with one of the programme themes.

Scholarship in Ghent University, Belgium for Study 2010-2012 (VLIR-UOS)

VLIR-UOS (Flemish Interuniversity Council – University Development Cooperation) is responsible for managing and making policy on the university development cooperation funds of Belgium’s Directorate-General for Development Cooperation (DGDC).

The study programme comprises two years of study, with courses as: Aquatic Ecology; Biology of Aquatic Organisms; Fish Culture Techniques; General Aspects of Aquaculture; Microbial Ecology and Environmental Sanitation; Physiology of Aquatic Organisms ; Technology of Fishery Products; Algae Culture; Aquatic Farm Management Training; Mollusc and Crustacean Culture; Aquaculture and the Environment; Larviculture and Larval Food Production ; Applied Statistics; Management in the Aquaculture Industry; Aquaculture Genetics; Diseases in Aquaculture etc. Subject to the Faculty’s approval: elective courses to a total amount of 15 credits, to be chosen from a list of courses from UGent and the partners of the European Master in Aquaculture and Fisheries: National University of Ireland, Cork; Wageningen Universiteit en Research Centre; Universidade do Algarve, Institutt for fiskeri- og marinbiologi, Universitetet i Bergen, Norges Teknisk-Naturvitenskapelige Universitet; Uniwersytet Warminsko – Mazurski w Olsztynie. Admission requirements

The programme is open to holders of a bachelor’s degree in exact or applied sciences, equivalent to at least three years’ university studies or a degree in Veterinary Medicine, Civil Engineering or Agricultural Engineering or any related area. Holders of other degrees must follow extra courses. Every application will be carefully examined individually. Some background in aquaculture is recommended.
The applicant must be proficient in the language of the course or training programme, i.e. English. Command of the English language is a very important criterion for admission. With the exception of those who have a diploma (Secondary Education, Academic Bachelor Degree, Master Degree) issued by an institution officially recognized by the Flemish Government, applicants must be able to prove their proficiency in English. There are 4 possibilities to supply this proof:

1. TOEFL certificate (the UGent TOEFL code is 2643) with:
a) a minimum total score of 550 on the paper based test, or
b) a minimum total score of 79 on an internet based test.
The test validity is max. 2 years.
2. IELTS with a minimum overall band score of 6.
The test validity is max. 2 years.
3. Proof of at least 1 year of comprehensive English-based instruction at a university or recognized equivalent.
4. Proof of a successful “Intermediate Academic English” test at the Ghent University Language Center.

Prospective students will not be allowed to enrol at UGent when they are unable to submit an official and by UGent recognized proof before the start of the Academic Period. For prospective students trying to obtain the “Intermediate Academic English” certificate at the UGent Language Center, the final language exam is the 22nd of September 2009. Remark: do not underestimate the level of difficulty of the UGent language test!

Failing to provide any of the abovementioned will result in not being allowed to enrol at UGent, thus this candidate will have to return back home.

Scholarship for Developing Country 2009: Grant university Master Grant

This Ghent University programme provides master grants to candidates from developing countries who wish to obtain a master’s degree at Ghent University. The grants are available for all master programmes at Ghent University. They are awarded for the duration of the studies with a maximum of 2 years. In case of a two-year-programme the scholarship will only be paid for the full term if the student successfully completes the first year of the programme.
The scholarship consists of an allowance of 964 euro per month plus the yearly tuition fee.

GENERAL FRAMEWORK

Scholarship type and duration

The master scholarships are awarded for the duration of the studies,
aiming at the delivery of a Ghent University diploma after max. 2 years
of study. With the scholarship application the applicant must also
submit a letter of admission to the study programme. The scholarship is
in principle paid for the total duration of the studies. In case of a
2-year study programme, the 2nd year will be paid upon successful
completion of the first year (minimum 60 credits).

Applicants for master’s programmes should already have obtained a
bachelor degree when they submit the application. For subsequent
master’s programmes, applicants should already have obtained a master
degree. No exceptions are allowed.

2. Nationality

The applicants must come from and should be nationals of one of the
developing countries on the country list of developing countries.
Priority, however, will be given to the categories on the DAC List of
Aid Recipients with the lowest levels of development and income.

3. Language and proficiency

The application is to be made in English. The applicant should have a very good command of the English language

Belgium - 2009 VLIR-UOS ITP and ICP Scholarship Programme in Various Fields

Every year, with the support of the Belgian Directorate-General for Development Cooperation (DGDC), VLIR-UOS awards scholarships to students from developing countries to study one of the 15 International Course Programmes (ICPs) or one of the 6 International Training Programmes (ITPs). The ICPs and ITPs target people from the South with a responsible position in civil society (at a university, school, NGO, ministry, etc).

Each year there are a maximum of 180 scholarships available for first-year ICP students and a maximum of 70 scholarships for ITP participants.

Training Programmes (ITP)
ITPs are short-term training programmes whose main focus is transferring skills rather than knowledge. The International Training Programmes are designed for people from developing countries with a certain degree of professional experience.

The ITPs aim at transferring knowledge and skills, and create the possibility for cooperation and networking.

Master Programmes (ICP)
ICPs are master programmes, lasting one or two academic years, all of which lead to a master’s degree. They focus on specific problems of developing countries. The main target group for the courses are students from developing countries, although the courses can also be attended by Belgian students or students from other countries.

The ICPs aim to provide a training in such a way that the knowledge that the students acquire is disseminated and applied in the home institution and country of origin.

General remark
As an official body administrating government funds, VLIR-UOS uses on this website the qualifications attributed in the Flemish Register for Higher Education. This database is governed by the Dutch-Flemish Accreditation Organisation (NVAO).

ICP-Ph.D. programme
Definition
To enable promising graduates of the International Courses (ICPs – ICPs are Master programmes that receive institutional support from VLIR-UOS, see list of Master programmes) to make a Ph.D. at a Flemish university, VLIR-UOS launched its ICP Ph.D. programme in 2003.

Starting from the academic year 2002-2003, a maximum of ten Ph.D. scholarships can be granted every academic year to excellent ICP graduates from a developing country.

The ICP Ph.D. programme aims to institutionally strengthen universities or research institutions in the South through capacity building, by upgrading local academic personnel by offering Ph.D. scholarships. Only ICP graduates that are nationals from a developing country are eligible for an ICP Ph.D. scholarship. See the call for all criteria.

Practical
An ICP Ph.D. scholarship consists of two two-year terms, and cannot be extended.
It is a ’sandwich’ scholarship, which means that in principle two-thirds of the research is conducted at the local institution and one-third at the Flemish university.

The scholar is free to choose the periods of his/her stays in Belgium and his/her home country, albeit in agreement with both supervisors. However, for practical reasons, the scholar is obliged to come to Belgium at the start of the scholarship, i.e. on 1 October of the reference year.

Funding is provided both on the level of the scholar as well as on the level of the local resp. the Flemish supervisor’s unit. See the call for more details.

A call is launched in November. Deadline for applications is February (varies per Flemish university – see the call). Selection takes place in May. Selected Ph.D. researchers start in October of that year.

Job description
Co-implement and coordinate the research project Bidirectional communication between the enteric nervous system and elements of the immune system in inflammatory gastrointestinal disorders (TOP-project funded by the Special Research Fund (BOF) of the University of Antwerp; duration: 4 years). This project aims at investigating the interactions between neuronal elements of the gastointestinal tract and elements of the immune system, i.e. mast cells and dendritic cells, during inflammation in two animal models. Special attention will be paid to the possible role of stress-related proteins and their receptors in this interaction.

Profile and requirements

* You have a doctoral degree and hold a MSc degree in the life sciences domain [sciences (biotechnology, biology, biochemistry; bio-engineering); pharmaceutical sciences; veterinary sciences; (bio)medical sciences].
* Experience with morphological techniques (immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, in situ hybridization, confocal microscopy, life cell imaging) is an asset.
* You are experienced or interested in molecular biological techniques (PCR, RT-PCR, quantitative PCR) and cell culturing (cell lines, primary cell cultures).
* Some experience with electrophysiological techniques is recommended.
* Experience in supervising PhD and Master students is preferred.
* You are a strong team player and motivated to become part of a multidisciplinary research group.

* A position as a full-time (100%) postdoctoral fellow/researcher (m/f) on an annual contract basis with the possibility of renewal for the duration of the project.
